Of course they chose to set him up with a know-it-all-Nancy on a stupid ranch in the middle of bum-fuckin’-nowhere. It had been 14 years since Carson McAllister had so much as seen green grass, nevermind hundreds of acres of it, and as he stepped from the county bus into a cloud of dust, he forced himself to remember why he was so angry. Work the last 11 years of his sentence off at a run down piece of shit homestead, generously labeled a ranch, or spend the rest of it picking fights with the others on his cell block and risk more time. “Control your temper,” they had told him. “Or we’ll control it for you.” Crock of shit.

“Control my temper my ass,” Carson muttered to himself, adjusting the near empty, military grade duffle over his shoulder. An ill-fitting pair of jeans and a t-shirt that was three sizes too large rode around in the back with a hand-me-down pair of lace-up work boots that probably weren’t going to fit him. Carson was bitter about the lack of choice in the whole situation, even if it was his own fault he was in this mess. That’s what the counselor had said, anyway. That it was Carson’s turn to take responsibility for the shit that went down 14 years, three months, and 17 days ago. He stumbled forward when the officer assigned to him shoved him out of the way, gritting his teeth and struggling to bite back the retort that was so ready to mess up his day.

“A Miss. Rodgers will be your new keep, pet,” the officer started on his rant, the sneer that tugged at his upper lip making his tone even more aggravating; he was looking to get a rise out of Carson. “You are to report in every morning via telephone, 5am on the dot and I don’t want to hear any shit about it, y’here?” Carson stared blankly ahead as the man continued. Do this, do that, be here, don’t forget this, don’t fuck it up, blah, blah. With a heavy shake of his head, the officer grunted. “I don’t even know why the warden’s giving you this opportunity, a fuck up like you.”

Carson knew the rules. Who to call, what number to use, when to key in his own very special pin. He certainly didn’t need the hours of chit-chat with his lawyer read back to him by a bus-guard. “At least I’m not spending my days chartering fuck-ups back and forth,” he tossed out, unimpressed and obviously done putting up with the other man. He coughed, doubled over a well-placed blow to his gut. Well deserved, too, after all the shit he’d talked up on the three hour long ride to the ranch, though Carson would be the last to admit. Unable to stop the chuckle that vibrated in his chest as he straightened, Carson smirked. “I understand that you’re a little upset you have to ride the bus all the wa-” Carson’s lungs ached for air after a second jab to the ribs was delivered to his chest.

“I’m not leaving until tomorrow morning, boy, just to make sure you get settled in. Niiiice and cozy.” The officer brushed invisible lint off his shirt and straightened his hat. “Mind yourself, I’m going to look for Rodgers.” Carson rocked back on his heels and dropped his head back to stare at the bright blue sky, the sun hot on his face.

“I hate this place.” Carson began muttering to himself as soon as the officer turned away and headed for the house. The dust hadn’t even began to settle and he wanted nothing more than to hop back on the stupid bus and let it take him right back to the hell hole he’d just barely left behind. “What a joke.”

Regret. Lily Rodgers was feeling nothing more than regret. She was generally a kind soul, so when the prison upstate asked if she'd be willing to help a prisoner readjust to life on the outside, give him a chance to start over while serving out the rest of his 11 year sentence, Lily had said yes. Of course, no one had told her his crimes, or how dangerous the man might be. She wasn't a particularly strong woman. Barely coming in at 5'5, she was fairly petite. For the most part, she did all of the work on her farm. She had cows for milk and cheese, crops for food, and horses for riding. She spent all of her time there. Lily had a few dogs running around, a big house with a pool, and of course, other animals, like chickens and cats. It was a good life. Her aunt Erna had died a few years back, leaving the farm to Lily.

Farm life was nice. It wasn't like the city, which was all hustle and bustle. The town itself was fairly small, with one restaurant, a movie theater and a general store. Which worked out well for Lily, she didn't really like to see animals killed, but she also needed meat, and they had theirs all prepackageed and ready. Lily was a decent chef, at least, she thought so. Life was lonely for her. All she had were her pet dogs and some occassional friends who came and went. Otherwise, Lily was lonely, and worked hard to maintain her farm, and her lovely life. It was nice doing things early and having a lot of the day to herself, she wasn't going to lie.

At least she had plenty of bedrooms in her home. Honestly, Lily was a little scared about her choice to let a stranger in, to put him to work at the farm. What if he ignored her? Well, she always had the option to have him sent back to the prison, but she was really trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. Life on the outside, with real meals, had to be much better than being in prison. In some sense, she wished she knew about his crimes, so she knew how dangerous he might be, but the time for that had long passed, and he was on his way. Lily was out on a horseback ride when the two appeared, and strode up to her own home in time to meet the officer. She tied her horse to a post as she greeted him, wondering where the prisoner was. They exchanged pleasantries before the male walked her back to the bus where the prisoner waited.

"I'm Lily. And you are?" Lily said as she saw the handsome man on the bus. She tried to be tough, but the reality was, she wasn't a tough person. Either the man would try to do the work, or he would go back to prison for the remainer of his sentence. Admittedly, Lily was hoping she could get through to him, show him there was more to life than just prison. Besides, he would have a freedom he hadn't had before. "Well, come on. I'll show you to your room." Lily said. She had to admit she wasn't sure whether to trust this man not to run away, but the cop would be staying for the night, and if he did run, then Lily would have him sent back. "Remember, you are here at my will. Fuck up, and you'll go back to prison." Lily said clearly.

"I'll get to work on something for dinner here shortly. I'm sure you're just sick of the prison food." Lily teased. Once they were at the house, Lily showed the man his own bedroom, complete with a soft bed, a closet and a dresser. He could customize it it he wanted, she didn't really care. The room across from the prisoner was for the cop for the night, and that seemed to satisfy the cop for now.

“Ooooooweeeeee…” Carson let out a slow whistle when Lily came into view, arching a brow and shamelessly taking in the sight of her. God, he loved the way a woman’s hips swayed when she walked and this one was definitely a woman. His brown eyes dropped to the ground at her feet and made a slow, meandering journey up her legs, the curve of her perfect hips, the gentle dip of her waist… He got hung up on her breasts and stayed there until the officer cut into his line of sight.

“Eyes up here, asshole.” Carson blinked, a cheeky grin on his scruffy face.

“No shame in admiring the finer arts,” he argued, trying to remember the man’s name. Carson stared at his name tag long enough to jolt his memory and make out the letters. “Officer Callihan.” He shot the man a wink and peered around him, trying to get a better look at his new landlady’s backside. And man, if she didn’t look adorable, trying to be brave.

“Surprised to find my keeper to be so sexy.” When she had asked who he was, Carson knew full well she was asking for his name but he opted to not give it to her. Not yet. If anything, the dumbass standing between them like he was ready to chop off Carson’s fingers if he reached for her would share his name. Sure enough, Callihan took away his fun and gestured his head toward the house.

“Enough of that nonsense, McAllister,” Callihan said, turning his attention to Lily. “I’m sorry, ma’am, this one’s a bit of a prick but if we didn’t trust he’d manage, we wouldn’t leave him here.” But even Callihan doubted the words as he said them outloud. This woman was barely five feet tall and looked like she couldn’t hurt a fly. “His name is Carson, and if he keeps acting like a child,” Callihan turned back to Carson and got up in his face. “We’ll continue to talk about him like he’s not here.”

Carson had to admit he was impressed. The officer had done a pretty impressive job switching personalities in front of the lady. Honest to God, Carson didn’t know a proper English vocabulary was stuck anywhere in that man’s head. Huh. When Lily interrupted, Carson almost had a chance to breathe a sigh of relief but her comment about fucking things up caused him to faulter in his step. Serves you right, dumbass. Besides, she’s just trying to put on a strong show, no doubt. But his brows came together.

“Don’t fuck this up, don’t fuck that up- okay, yeah. I get it.” At least the woman stood up for herself. Carson could appreciate that.

The room Lily had set up for him was nice. A definite far cry from the cold cell and cheap foam roll he’d been living on for nearly half his life. She had even left it painted in a warm and welcoming tone; for a small moment, Carson didn’t feel like he deserved any of it but he was quick to shove that down into the pit of things to forget about. Lily’s soft voice pulled him out of his thoughts and he couldn’t stop the grin. “Yes ma’am, I can’t say the last time I had a home cooked meal.” Truth was, Carson didn’t even really remember what anything else tasted like but boy, he sure did dream of chocolate ice cream. A nudge from Callihan reminded him to ask if there was anything he could do to help out.

“You don’t mind if I take a quick shower, do you? Settle in a bit and all…” Carson shifted the bag from one shoulder to the other as if to punctuate his thoughts. Another, less friendly nudge from Callihan. He refrained from rolling his eyes and gritted his teeth instead. “And then maybe there’s something I could give a hand with.” His eyes took in the sight of Lily again, he’d be damned if he didn’t at least make following orders fun. “Dinner wise.” He finally added, bringing his gaze back up to hers.

It didn't escape Lily's notice that the man was checking her out. For a moment, Lily had to wonder when the last time he had even seen a woman in all her curvy beauty was. From the way Carson was looking at her, she'd judge that it had either been a long time, or she was exactly his type. Either way, she didn't exactly mind it. This could be a lot more fun, assuming the man actually put in the work. Maybe sex could be used as a motivator with Carson. Even if that didn't work out, she couldn't deny he looked like he would be a lot of fun in bed. Lily was no prude, more accurately she was a very free woman, at least sexually. With the way Carson had looked at her, Lily was almost mad the cop was staying the night. But she supposed it didn't really matter what she did even if the cop might not like the idea.

Lily blushed as she heard Carson calling her sexy, though she did notice he avoided her question. It seemed the cop had less patience for Carson's shit than Lily did, because he immediately began speaking, explaining who he was and even claiming they trusted him to manage this well enough. But it wasn't that convincing, honestly. That made her more nervous than Lily was willing to admit. She definitely wouldn't be able to handle Carson if he were to overpower her and escape. He was a very toned man, clearly using the weights and whatnot in the prison. "Technically, I'm not your keeper. Your choices determine your fate here." Lily couldn't help but say. "Let's be clear here. This is not prison, you will essentially have your freedom. Assuming you do your work every day, come back, and don't get yourself into trouble. I imagine it'd be hard to get into trouble out here, but you may surprise me." Lily stated with a smile. She knew the cop didn't like it, but she didn't see a point in making him feel like he was a prisoner in her own home. Carson only had simple things to do anyway, for now. Stick him with easy jobs first, see if he could handle it before he got the harder ones that were tough for such a short woman.

She could tell that Carson wasn't that interested in her telling him not to fuck it up, and no doubt that had been drilled into his head for hours. The prison was taking a big chance on Carson and he probably knew it. But this had to be better than what the prison was like. Not to mention, Lily could tell he had taken some abuse as recently as today. Thankfully, Lily wasn't about to hurt him in any way. Worst case she might break his heart, if he had one. Otherwise, she wasn't going to bother him much, except to supervise his work in the beginning.

When Carson agreed he wouldnt mind a home cooked meal, Lily smiled. She planned to make something meaty and amazing. Besides, she was a natural cook anyway, and she loved to cook for others when she could. She landed on a pot roast with some mashed potatoes, for what to make. It wouldn't take too long but would be hearty and delicious. Carson's words snapped her out of her thoughts as she looked over at him. He was definitely a very sexy man, and her mind could easily wander if she let it. Lily had to admit that she didn't love that this criminal was totally her type, but he definitely was. There was no changing that. "Sure, go ahead. Bathroom is just up the hall." Lily said with a smile, pointing the way to what would be Carson's private bathroom. After all, she lived in the basement, with her own bathroom and media rooms down there for relaxation.

Lily blushed as she heard Carson ask if there was something else he could help with, her mind going to dirty places. If he kept up like this, it wasn't going to take long for her to wind up in bed with the man. Would he even be any good? She imagined he hadn't really had sex in some time, but it didn't mean he would be bad. He seemed... very dominant, a very sexy thing to have when a man was bedding her, anyway. She shook her head of her thoughts as she heard Carson. "I'm sure I can find something for you to do." Lily said with a wink. Just because the cop was there, it didn't necessarily mean she couldn't sneak off with Carson somewhere and have sex with him. It seemed like he wanted that as well, anyways.

Carson gave Lily a Pop-eyed grin, lopsided and quick, and tilted his head to signal his appreciation. “I’m sure officer Callihan would be happy to follow you down and help with some set up?” He posed the question at the officer, a brow lifted with pushy curiosity. Callihan’s expression tightened, warning Carson to watch his step, though he agreed to follow along and give the probationary some time to clean himself up.

“He’s right,” John Callihan finally said, stepping around Carson and gesturing an arm behind Lily as if to guide her toward the kitchen. “I’d be happy to help while McAllister makes himself presentable; maybe you can tell me a little about the history of this place?” The conversation faded as the two walked away, leaving Carson standing in the hall between bedrooms, the bathroom behind him still. He grunted a soft sound and turned on his heel, eyes taking in the walls around him now that he was alone and better able to focus. Carson scrubbed a hand over his face and heaved a heavy sigh, muttering to himself as he made his way to the bathroom.

After fighting for longer than he’d ever admit to get the shower head to kick out water and figure out which direction was versus cold, Carson just stood in front of the mirror and let the bathroom fill with steam. He studied his face, using his fingers to grasp his chin and turn his own head left and right and back again. The lines in his face were deeper than the last time he had stared at himself so clearly, the years of prison showing in the scowl creases that had seemed to permanently plant themselves in the otherwise strong features of his face. Pulling the crusty shirt off over his head, Carson spent another couple of moments staring at the scars that his shoulders, back and torso showed.

“What a life, man,” he whispered to himself, feeling a tremendous amount of displeasure toward his battered appearance. The strong lines of his build did little to disguise the wear and tear, and the ink that covered his arms was very obviously the work of someone inside; unprofessional and a little sloppy if anyone took too close a look. He waved it off with a physical movement of his arm and hand, dismissing his reflection in the mirror.

Hot water pounded against Carson’s skin. He stood under the stream, a little too tall to stand directly under it, with his eyes closed and his mind blank. Dust and dirt poured off his skin in rivers of brown, rushing for the drain and disappearing for good; Carson couldn’t help but think that a metaphor. Maybe there was a real opportunity to change something here… suds joined the rivers of dirt as Carson drug soap and a washcloth over himself. He stood in the shower until the water ran cold, not caring if Lily would see an issue with it, and when he finally stepped from the shower, his complexion red from the heat, Carson felt a little more human.

It was easy to feel ungrateful for the clothing that had been stuffed in the duffle he’d been handed on his way out the door and though he was tempted to strut down to the kitchen, naked as the day he was born, Carson pulled the too-large shirt over his head. He stared at his reflection, pulling on the material as though it would somehow magically fit him well, and nodded his head. “Maybe you can convince her to take you into town. Or at least send her into town for you.” Carson continued to talk to himself as he pulled the jeans up over his briefs - at least those were new, straight out of the package, and seemed to fit nice enough. His socks were a little worn. Pushing a hand through his thick hair, Carson breathed another deep sigh. “All or nothing, baby.” he offered as a vote of self-encouragement. “All or nothing.”

Stepping quietly back the way he came, Carson followed the sound of voices coming from the kitchen, his cocky, nothing-matters-to-me charm coming back into play like the easy flip of a switch before he even came into view.

While Carson was off in the shower, Lily and Callihan did some prep work. Lily spent most of her time putting the officer to work. After all, she knew how prison officers acted around other people, versus how they treated prisoners. Less like people. It was such a shame, and while Lily knew Carson needed a good adjustment back to the real world. She figured everyone deserved basic human decency. Hopefully Carson would work out as an employee. She wanted him to succeed and manage to get out of this experience more well rounded and a better person. Not that she knew what he had done.

By the time Carson had returned to the kitchen, Lily was plating the food. An assortment of meatballs, some pasta and sauce, with a healthy salad and some fruits chopped up. For the most part, Lily ate healthy, but she figured that it would be good to provide an assortment of good foods. After all, she could splurge on some hearty meals every so often. She certainly worked hard enough to not need to worry about her figure with unhealthy meals. Callihan sat down first and Lily stared at him awkwardly, deciding to let the two men get their food first. "Well, dig in. I'm sure the drive made you hungry." Lily said softly.

She didn't particularly care for Callihan's presence all that much. How could anyone relax and adjust to a new way of life with the past still lurking there and haunting him? This officer did not seem to much like Carson, that was very obvious. What was even more obvious was that the officer was definitely going to be preventing any chance for Lily to act on her attraction to Carson. Criminal or not, he was hot. For now though, she'd have to do her best to avoid the man's charm. It was annoying. While she could definitely sneak off somewhere on the farm with Carson, it would have to be once the cop was asleep. Hell, Lily couldn't wait until he was gone.

"After this, you can come with me. We need to feed the horses and the animals on the farm. I'm sure that won't be too difficult for you to learn." Lily finally said.

The smell of carbohydrates filled Carson’s nose and overwhelmed the olfactory, pure and absolute pleasure. He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath, his broad chest expanding slowly, held it, and let it out again with a dramatic explosion of air. “Ms, you’ve definitely got a talent.” Carson settled himself into a chair, not bothering to offer his help anywhere, and immediately dug into the plate that was set before him.

Pure and absolute pleasure was an understatement. This woman had to be a witch because the only description for the simple meal was: magic. He couldn’t swallow fast enough.

A boot to his shin brought Carson back to the moment and he became aware of his surroundings again. He chuckled, sitting back in his chair, and nodded. “I don’t think I’d be able to tell you how long it’s been since I’ve had a proper meal and it’s obvious I couldn’t help myself.” The first part was a lie, he knew how long it had been down to the hour, the minute if he thought about it hard enough, but being unable to help himself was another understatement. He wondered how long it would be before he wasn’t able to keep from helping himself to Lilly Rodgers. He let himself stare at her breasts again, openly, until a second boot-to-shin collision jolted his attention again; Carson didn’t apologize.

“I’d be happy to come out to the barn and,” he paused, giving Lilly a wink. “Give a helpful hand.” Carson hadn’t worked a single day on any farm, hard labor wasn’t really something he had ever been given the opportunity to perform, but he figured he’d probably follow Lilly anywhere, if even just to look at her ass.

Lily watched as the two men ate her food happily. The cop's demeanor seemed so dark and constantly controlling over Carso and his actions. Truthfully, Lily did not know why the cop had to stay the night. It wasn't like the cop would deter Carson if he chose to run away. Besides, Carson was an adult capable of his own choices. Lily figured this could be a lot better than prison, but ultimately, everything was up to Carson. Here he had a soft bed, some good food that wasn't the crap one got in prison, all in exchange for some hard labor. It wasn't much different than the hard labor he had to endure in prison, but he would be paid and able to use his money as he chose instead of on the limited things available in commissary.

She smiled as she heard Carson's compliment. In truth, it had been a long time since Lily had cooked for anyone. In country life, there were really only so many men available to date and in truth, a lot of them hadn't worked out for her. It was fine though, Lily was very independent. Not to mention, a lot of men had problems when they ended up seeing the burn marks all over her body. Usually she kept them hidden, but of course, intercourse meant she was exposing herself to others. It wasn't worth the drama of explaining, besides, men didn't like the scars. As if she liked them herself. It was a constant reminder of how her family home had gone up in flames when she was 10, killing her father, her mother, and her little brother. Why she survived still haunted Lily.

Lily giggled as she heard Carson's words. "Been locked up a long time?" Lily asked. Truthfully, she didn't know what he'd done or even how long his sentence was, but since he was allowed to run it out here for the next ten years, Lily figured it had been a long sentence. In truth, she didn't want to know what he had done, nor would she ever ask. She did notice he was staring at her breasts, again, but it didn't last. Lily assumed it was probably that cop again, interfering. Lily blushed as she saw Carson's wink, but then smirked. Even if he was quite handsome, she was still planning on putting him to work.

Granted, Carson would probably get to do anything he wanted sexually, he was still going to have to work. After all, things didn't just come easy. However, Lily was excited for the chance to be alone with Carson for once. They had some work to do, yes. But there were also some hidden places in the barn where one could lay in the hay and do whatever they wanted. Of course, this was probably temporary, since once the cop was gone they'd be free to do whatever they wanted together just about anywhere, as long as there weren't clients for lessons hanging around. Lily gathered the empty plates, asked the cop to clean up and do the dishes, before leading Carson out to the barn.

From there, Lily showed Carson how to feed the horses and brush them out gently, taking half and working through them slowly.
