On the matter of the tags; very fair assessment. I just noticed we already have an "Erotic" and "Non-Erotic" tag, and that doesn't seem to have mattered at all in this equation...
Based on what I'm getting out of other people's posts on this thread however; I think this is an unavoidable issue; it seems the people who contact others for smut unprompted don't even care to read profiles and request threads in the first place. It can be seen as the equivalent of cat-calling for roleplay servers, I imagine...

I mean, my literal first DM here was a brief hello quickly followed by asking if I would be interested in roleplaying a DD/LB arrangement... Maybe if there's an option to block members from DMing you, but that'd be on a case by case basis, and could become a drag.

EDIT: We do have an "ignore member" feature, on profiles. That might have to do for this.

Yup. Even on the site Discord, I had someone contact me once to "discuss my kinks" with them. It's gross behavior. All you can do is hit the Ignore button, which is basically blocking the other user, or just ignore the DMs and leave the conversations immediately. It isn't against our rules to cold-call for things like that, and I wouldn't feel comfortable making an actual rule about it either. The most I could reliably do is tell people to stop being creepy, but with a blanket of anonymity they aren't nearly as inclined.

In any case, this is going off topic. I appreciate all of the insight though.

I may be the odd man out, but I enjoy reciveing 'cold calls' in my DMs. As a very open minded and flexible RPer who is up for trying and exploring all kinds of RPs, I'm not one for making RTs. I don't think I'd be able to put all of my thoughts and ideas in one place, and I wouldn't want to be restrictive. Not to mention I can also be shy and hesitant to message people first. So to that end I hope that there aren't any rules created agaisnt cold calling.

There won't be. As much as I'd like to do something about gross people being aggressively sexual, making a rule about it would not only be unfair to people who don't do that, it would also be impossible to enforce without prying into everyone's privacy. There's maybe one bad reason TO do it, and a lot of good reasons NOT to.

Splitting the request thread forums is equally reliant on the user using them correctly, just like tagging. Is it slightly easier to pick a forum? Yes. Will it completely solve users not using the site as intended? No. We'll have to see how much of an improvement it turns out to be, versus potentially a mess of various threads thrown in at random by people who don't pay attention (of which there are many).

One argument against splitting the forums is that I (and a lot of people) don't actually know that we like or want something until we experience it.
If the forum split is actually used by users as intended, it promotes close-mindedness. Am I really going to scour two forums? No, I'll stay in my lane.
If you're a traditionally story-focused author, you will be discouraged to investigate more thoroughly what smut writing can offer (which is more than its lowest common denominator - "heh heh sex").
If you're a traditionally smut-focused author, you will be discouraged to investigate more thoroughly what story writing can offer (which is more than its lowest common denominator - "Stella was a beautiful princess living in a big castle waiting for her prince charming. She swooned out of bed into her slippers...").

This is why I voted against. The problem cannot ever fully be solved because it is a user problem, not technology problem, and I'd rather be encouraged to check out more by the site's design, not less due to segregation. That said, I respect the idea behind it and the people who vote in favor, and I do not mean to diminish their experiences. But in my view, the costs outweigh the gains, and I don't see it being a magical solution to very human issues.

EDITS: it's a bitch typing on phone. Probably an unpopular opinion, I hope people will be charitable with me.

This is true, but with moderators it'd be a simple case to just move a post in the wrong forum to the right one. It's an easier way of organizing for us, even if the users don't pay any attention. Still, 'only works if people notice' is a really solid point.

More good points. The only counter argument I could provide is that people looking for more sexual pursuits aren't going to look at story plots anyway, and vice versa. The ones who don't pay attention to the systems in place will ignore every system, more often than not.

Oh, I don't think it's going to solve every problem. But there isn't really a space in the RP forums that exist purely for adults who don't want to have to scroll through rows of smut to find someone wanting to write a good story. There are a lot of spaces devoted purely to storytelling, but you usually have to contend with children in them, and all the drama and issues which that entails. I don't see the extra work as a 'cost', per se, since it could help someone have a better time finding what they actually want.

Regardless, I'm glad you spoke up! I was wanting to hear from the "Against" users, and you make a lot of good points that I really do agree with.

    God, this is a mood.

Thanks for the very kind response. I understand that a large portion of the users may feel drowned out and/or inconvenienced. Since it looks likely that it will happen, I'm curious to see how it will play out.

I'm an exception to that, at least. And as you can probably guess, I feel like we should avoid making it easier for people to be wilfully blind to what's out there. But that's just my personal preference though. I can see that you want to prioritize people's convenience, even if it encourages staying within their own lanes / boxes.

To me, that seems like it can be an argument against splitting the forums. I hope it won't just be more of hassle to maintain that separation manually yourselves every time people disregard it. But there's nothing wrong with orderliness and a can-do attitude if the results are in line with the intent.

Yeah, I didn't see much from the 'no' side so thought I'd weigh in for myself at least. Glad it was somewhat helpful. :)

Might be unpopular opinion, but the reason like 90% of people that join an adult rp forum is to write explicit rps. and 90% of those explicit rps are erotic rps. If I wanted a non erotic/explicit Rp forum, I would have stayed on RpNation or something like that.

We are all adults here. If you don't like something, don't rp it, don't read it and don't look at it.
Don't change the whole forum because you don't want an explicit adult forum, etc. A lot of people are looking for both Porn with Plot, Porn without Plot and plot central with smut on the side.

There really isn't a black and white line that you can divide.

I never said that there was. I understand this solution isn't perfect, but there's plenty of other places to get your rocks off online other than Umbra. As I've said before, there aren't many places that don't also include children that are devoted purely to plot. One part of one forum won't kill the horny people.

You're making it sound like you want to completely remove the adult elements of Umbra... I honestly couldn't vouch for that.
Getting solicited for a smut RP without a want or need for it can be annoying, but it's good to have it as an option.
Of course, I might just be overthinking the "[...]there aren't many places that don't also include children that are devoted purely to plot. One part of one forum won't kill the horny people." part of your post...

...I'm firmly in the "I want to have my cake and eat it too" camp.

That's kinda judgmental and a bit offensive considering I don't 'get my rocks off' online. Me and my other rp partner are ace. So to be referred to as 'horny' repeatedly, especially by an admin and told to go somewhere else because of what we write in an adult forum is a bit off putting. Not to mention you sound like you are putting down smut writers. Considering that I was recommended this forum because there was no judgement and no harrassment of explicit and erotic writers, that's a bit terrible. I never had a problem until I was tagged in this?

So, I will most likely finish out my rps, and then maybe find somewhere else if this is how I'm going to be treated by admin.

If you feel attacked then I apologize. That isn't my intent. I stand by what I said; Umbra isn't meant to be a place purely for smut, and there's a large percentage of people who want a space for one and the other. If there's more who don't, they have yet to vote or to make their voices heard. You were tagged because I tagged everyone in the site, since this is a change that affects everyone. If you want to go, then there's nothing I can do about that.

And that's fine. At least be respectful when talking about other members' writing hobbies, by keeping personal prejudices and stereotypes out of discussions?
I love umbra, but the way that was addressed really rubbed the wrong way.

I'd also like to see boards for male and female. So if I am looking for a Female partner or Female character to play opposite I can just go to the Female board to find that.

I do love the idea of Plot based and Smut based boards as well.

Splitting it up by (seeking) male and female would get complicated. I know some other boards do this, but the trouble is that some people will want to do both, or have multiple characters, or futas or NB, and you'd also have to distinguish between gay and straight, and it could quickly get very complicated. Better to just use the tags for that, (although it would be nice if we could filter on combinations). What I just do is filter on MxF and then I visually search for the blue 'seeking male' tag on the right side of the list.

When people want both they.just post in both of all boards as relevant to their ideas. It would cut down on the unusually high amount of tags I see on this site too.

Yeah, the board by gender thing wouldn't work. I can see a dozen problems with it from an administrative standpoint alone.

In any case, poll is closed, thread is locked. It looks as though more voted for the split than against it, so the next step is for me to make the forum and assign the correct permissions for Prefixes and such so everyone can use it. I probably won't do that until this weekend, but stay tuned for another announcement. Thank you to all who participated in this process.
