Shoulder-length black hair was swept back out of her face and put into a ponytail that was a full inch off-center. The wearer wasn't particularly bothered by that; aesthetic only mattered so much as it affected survivability. Grey eyes focused exclusively on the notebook laying open on the table before her, and she bounced an eraser off her bottom lip as she thought through the hypothetical problem she had posed for herself. A tray of school food sat ignored at her elbow.

The only noise she heard was the crinkle of paper as she turned the page on her notebook, despite the bustle of the crowded cafeteria. Dozens of other students were talking and laughing and eating all around her, but she only had focus for her work. She used the tip of her pencil to trace a line across an imaginary battlefield and shook her head, twirling her fingers and applying the eraser to the line--which she promptly re-drew with a slightly different trajectory. "Right," she murmured, nodding to herself. "Perfect."

A rough shove nearly sent her toppling out of her seat. Her notebook was nearly sent flying, too, but she snapped it shut and directed an enraged glare at the one who had shoved her... only to realize it was one of her teammates. "Ah. Let me guess. You think I'm spending too much time strategizing again."

The young man who had bumped her smiled a humorless smile as he sat down next to her, setting his tray in front of himself. Where she was pale, he was dark, and his hair was kept close-cut in tight curls on his head. "Way too much. Let me see--" he reached out to tug at the notebook, but she refused to let go, "--planning for us to take on a Nevermore? A whole horde of Megaliath? Maybe a Leviathan or three?"

    "Hands off."

"Fine, fine." He shook his head, still smiling, and poked at the soup on his tray unenthusiastically. "But for the record, you're overdoing it. The team isn't gonna crumple if you don't have a plan for every situation, Selena. You can take a break. Eat and sleep. Like normal humans."

"First of all, Bishop, we aren't normal humans. We're Hunters and Huntresses. A cut above by necessity. And second of all, I would rather go into the city and get something to eat than risk whatever they put in the soup." She squinted at his tray. "I mean, I can't call you a coward for risking it, but I might question your will to live."

"Always the comedian," he deadpanned and sipped at the bowl. After a moment tasting he pulled a face and swallowed. "Alright, there's my daring-do for today. But really, what is it you're planning out? I'm gonna hear about it sooner or later. Ari and Lyra would wanna know too."

"Well, then we can wait until they join us."

"Which might not be until later tonight. I think they took lunch in the city with Lyra's old man."

"Well, then you can just wait until later tonight."

Janelle, as a team leader, felt more of a duty to her planning than some of her team members. She liked knowing she had a plan for any eventuality. As they got better and became one of the top teams at Beacon, Team JAGE got harder and harder things to defeat. It was a lot more fun, as Janelle personally enjoyed the challenge. Not to mention any excuse to use her Katanas. Janelle had to admit her Katanas were still her favorite weapon, even though others at the school had some pretty impressive weapons of their own. In truth, Janelle admired all weapons, but she made hers to her own rules and specifications, so it was her love in a sense.

They were in the cafeteria. Well, Janelle was. The rest of her team, she really didn't know. They all seemed to have significant others they wanted to be with. Not that Janelle really cared. She had been through enough as a bisexual woman. Nowadays, her fixation was on her rivalry with the other top team leader at beacon. Selena was a lot like her in some ways, but mostly, Janelle was kind of jealous of her. Not that she would ever admit it. It just seemed like Selena was a bit smarter than her, more prepared. Ultimately, it was a competition between their teams, to be the best. And Janelle wanted to be the best. A part of it for her, was the need to sort of crush Selena. It fueled Janelle.

So when she spied Selena across the cafeteria, a wicked smile crossed her face. She slipped her belongings in her bag and disposed of her uneaten lunch before walking up and snatching Selena's notebook. Janelle moved out of reach of Selena and flipped through it before yawning in amusement. "God you're boring. Don't you have anything better to do than plan obsessively like some freak?" Janelle asked as she handed it back to the other.

Selena was still smirking at Bishop, savoring her own rare moment of witty back-and-forth, when Janelle snatched her notebook and started in with her usual sneering commentary. Her cheeks turned slightly pink--she hated confrontation with other humans, and especially hated it with Janelle.

She'd had never been quick to trust people by her very nature. She didn't believe in pure motives, or that others acted without personal gain or desire. Her parents had never really been in the picture, and life alone had not been gentle. Bishop was one of the rare few who had proven her assumptions about people wrong, and things had very nearly turned romantic before Selena realized two key things about herself. Firstly, that she was not attracted to men in a romantic sense, and secondly, the actual object of her desire was someone she would rather die than admit to wanting. Luckily, Bishop had remained trustworthy and kept her secrets and thus her trust.

Of course, that didn't do much of anything to help in situations like this.

She snatched the notebook back and frowned, hugging it in both arms to her chest. "Obsessive planning keeps my team a full five points ahead of yours," she managed to fire back after a moment, and Bishop (who had opted to focus back on his soup rather than insert himself) choked on his food trying not to laugh.

There was just... something so pleasing about pissing off Selena. Selena was actually kind of adorable when she got upset, the other girl's cheeks would go pink. Honestly, Janelle really enjoyed getting a rise out of Selena. A part of that was because well, sometimes it seemed like the only way to get the other girl's attention. Not that Janelle would ever admit that. In fact, for the most part, no one knew her secret, and she preferred it that way. Some would say it was a form of denial, on Janelle's part, the whole fake boyfriend facade. It helped that as far as anyone knew, her so called boyfriend had long since graduated and was out saving the world.

Honestly, for Janelle, lying was easier than admitting she wasn't into men. Let alone admitting that she wanted the person she liked to taunt the most. They had been rivals most of their life, but now, it was mostly for the sake of getting Selena's attention in some small form. It was probably the closest Janelle was ever going to get to admitting she wanted Selena. Janelle couldn't help but giggle as Selena snatched her notebook back hard. Janelle's smile faded as she heard Selena, not to mention the male choking.

"Yeah?" Janelle said softly. "Doesn't mean I can't destroy you in a fight." Janelle couldn't help but taunt. "You have weak spots that I can exploit easier than most." Janelle said coyly with a little wink. "Come on, let's have a fight!" Janelle suggested with a smile. "How about this....? If you win, I'll leave you alone for... mmm, let's say a week. If I win, you have to do what I say for a week." Janelle suggested with a wink. She knew this was just a game, and Selena would never take her up on it, but oh! The fun she could have if she were to win. Not to mention, she could learn to be better than Selena simply by being around her. Janelle couldn't help but lick her lips a bit seductively, just imagining if she could push Selena into a kiss, if she won, that was. Man, having Selena at her mercy sounded amazing.

Sometimes the way the other girl spoke made Selena wonder. Did she know her secret? It wasn't possible--it couldn't have been. Bishop would never give it away to anyone, and nobody else was even aware. She hadn't even dated before coming to Beacon. Or after, she thought, cheeks flushing deeper as she forced herself to look away. Janelle just knew how to push her buttons, she told herself. There wasn't anything there.

    Right?

Her tone was promising, and her words were loaded with promise that Selena could only begin to fathom. The taunting, the sneering, the aggression--she'd be lying if some part of her didn't respond to that a little too eagerly. Her eyes narrowed, though, and she leaned back away from Janelle. "A fight?" she repeated, sounding as incredulous as she felt. "You want to try and beat me up? Dust, Janelle, I know you hate me but that's really just way too far."

Even though she hated confrontation something about Janelle really had her incensed. Maybe it was the tone, maybe it was the thrill, maybe it was just because she was sick of feeling like a pushover. Either way, she stood and leaned forward, getting right back in her rival's face, planting her hands on the tabletop and glaring down Janelle like she was a Grimm that needed handling. "I won't fight you... but if you want me to humiliate you, I can think of another way to make it happen.

"The forest that Beacon uses to test recruits--it's gotten full of Grimm again. Ms. Greene's been asking for people to go thin them out a little ahead of the next wave of initiates. How about instead of hitting each other, we go destroy some Grimm? Same terms. Whoever kills less Grimm has to serve the other's every whim for a whole week." She didn't waver, and next to her Bishop narrowed his eyes. "What do you say, Janelle? Willing to put some action behind the big talk?"

Janelle had to admit she wasn't entirely sure why Selena's cheeks flushed, but it was actually very cute. She hated thinking that way about her rival, but then, this wasn't a typical rivalry. Mostly, Janelle messed with Selena to get her attention. Selena was such a bookworm, so studious. It could be impossible to get her attention unless she forced it like this. Besides, it wasn't like Janelle was anywhere near ready to admit she had feelings for Selena. God, that would be so embarrassing, and it wasn't like she had ever seen Selena date. As far as she knew, Selena was probably straight. That tended to be her luck, falling for someone who was straight and uninterested.

It only phased her what she had suggested as Selena reacted like she was aiming to hurt her intentionally. "I just want to see what you think makes you better than me. Don't take it that personally." Janelle pointed out with a smirk. The other had already backed up, almost as if she were scared. "Also, hate's not the word I'd use necessarily."

Janelle let out a giggle as she noticed how quickly Selena's whole demeanor had changed. Now, the girl had some sort of courage. Selena was in her face, and Janelle actually found it hot. It wasn't often that Selena stood up for herself. This time, however, it was Janelle who's cheeks went red. She suddenly felt like she couldn't control herself, but she tried her hardest not to do anything with the other girl so close to her. It didn't stop Janelle from staring at Selena's lucious lips while the other talked.

Janelle had gotten so focused on Selena's lips that she honestly had no idea what the other girl had suggested. However, she had no choice, the other was challenging her, and asking if she was in. "Alright, you're on. But no crying when you lose. That's so unattractive, even for you." Hell, eventually she would figure out what she was agreeing to.

The only thing was, Selena was still in her face, and Janelle was losing her will to fight kissing the other. It was becoming almost... painfully awkward for Janelle, and at the moment, she could only see one way out. So, Janelle made the choice to lean in closer to the other girl and kissed her softly for a good bit of time, before awkwardly pulling away as she realized what she had done. After that, Janelle couldn't deal with seeing Selena's reaction, or dealing with how awkward that was going to be, so instead, Janelle took off and headed to her room, mentally kicking herself for acting on it for the tiniest second. She had definitely acted on something she'd always wanted to do, but it was very awkward, not to mention, she couldn't exactly explain why she had done that. More than that, Janelle had never been quite so tempted by Selena before, and she couldn't stop herself. Selena's lips had been soft and sweet, almost tasting like strawberries.

God, she hoped Selena would just... forget it happened.
