She spent the rest of the training session, panicking as anxiety clawed over her. What's going to happen next? She gripped her gun, her heart pounding against her rib cage.

    --

By the time it had all finished, she worried she was going to pass out. She hurried back to her tent, quickly storing her gun and weapondry. Cassandra bit her lip, taking a swig from her canteen before letting out a shaky sigh. Can't avoid it forever. She gulped down a nervous breath before leaving the small tent. She offered her tentmate a quite nod of greeting before she hurried towards the head tents. She scanned down the rows, her eyes landing on a small sign reading, Captain. She sniffed down her pride as she approached. She gulped quietly before pulling back one of the curtains. She poked her head inside before fully entering. "Y-You wanted to see me sir."

The rustle of the tent flaps alerted the Captain to his visitor. Without lifting his eyes from the journal before him, Connor chastized the visitor. "It is customary to knock and await permission to enter an officer's quarters, whether it is a room or a tent. Even for just your head." His eyes lifted to see Private Berkshire. "Come in, private." He offered before finishing jotting down his sentence.

Setting the journal and writing instrument aside, the Captain folded his hands before him and looked to the young recruit. "You seem to be having a rough go of it, Private." He began, patiently. "You are physically weak, timid and an easy target for others. I have half a mind to send you packing back to your mama. Unfortunately, we are in desperate need of men. Besides, however misguided, your motive for being here is a noble one, and I respect that." Connor explained, looking at the boy in the ill-fitting uniform. He wondered if the boy had a father, since the private seemed to lack evidence of a man's influence and life training. Perhaps he was just a mother's boy.

The officer caught those blue eyes again, set pleasantly in the soft features of the young man. Connor had to admit there was a beauty to the youth, and it made Berkshire appear even less of a soldier. "So, since I don't want to send you home, what are we going to need to do to make you a soldier? Aside from fulfilling an obligation to protect your brother, I see little desire in you to become a fighter."

She slowly eneterd, gulping down some fears and protests.

His words stung a bit, but he really wasn't wrong. She wasn't strong, wasn't ready for war, and wasn't by any means a boy. She sighed softly before nodding. "I-I don't know sir... I feel as though I should be helping, though you aren't wrong. I'm not something that impressive... God I can't even walk in a straight line without stumblin' and makin' a complete fool of myself. Why am I even fuckin' here, I'm gonna die." Her voice faltered, her bright blue eyes slowly filling with fear. She ran a hand through her hair, combing through it with a sigh.

The boy was undone, and with the show of barely restrained emotion, Berkshire appeared, and sounded, even more feminine. Connor could, with little stretch of the imagination, beleive that he could pass as a woman. Perhaps that explained the strange notions that the private seemed to stir in the captain, however unbidden they were. The officer narrowed his eyes as he studied the peculiar recruit.

"With an attitude like that, you would be the first to take a bullet. That repuslive self-deprecating attitude is deadly, for you and your fellows." Connor said rather coldly. "One's attitude is the first thing that will determine his survivability." The veteran explained. "And you are not something impressive because you do not impress yourself. You do have qualities that are impressive, private. Your selflessness and loyalty to your brother is one very admirable trait. It also is impressive the bravery it takes to make such a sacrifice, knowing that you most likely would be sent into the fighting. Own those traits, soldier."

Connor looked the soldier up and down again. He grunted almost imperceptibly, as if coming to some decision or conclusion. He met those unnervingly beautiful blue eyes. "Now, its time for you to be honest. I am not a fool, Berkshire. You can keep your distance from the others, hide under your cap and high collar, but even they won't be fooled for long."

She sighed before nodding slowly, though at his final words, she tensed. She looked up at him, panic shooting through her body. "I-I don't know what you mean sir," She gulped, her legs feeling like they were going to crumble under her own weight.

Did he know? Did he figure it out? How many other people knew? Her mind raced with questions, a feeling of lightheadedness swirled through her. She worried she was going to puke or pass out.

Connor could not miss the physical impact of his statement. The soldier's face paled, a hard swallow was seen in the slender throat. his small voice stuttering as he denied comprehension of the accusation. The Captain was playing on a hunch, an educated guess. He was fairly sure he was right, though he had not personally heard of any instance where a woman had attempted to join the army in disguise. It was a rather foolish scheme, given that discovery was inevitable in the close quarters of army life.

If it were true, that Berkshire was a female, it didn't discount her bravery and sacrifice on behalf of her brother (if that story were true) and her country. The fact that the recruit denied it complicated the matter. If it were true and the soldier had confessed, Connor could ponder a course of action in full knowledge. But without confession, he would have to play out is assumption and risk being wrong. Not that there were serious consecquences for falsely accusing a soldier of being a woman, other than further humiliating the young man who seemed to be a magnet for being humiliated by simple army life.

The Captain's gaze fixed securely on Berkshire's eyes, as if to penetrate them and find the truth there. Either this was a woman, or his firm position of heterosexuality was wavering. Those eyes were beautiful, without argument. The private's soft features were attributed to youth, that of a boy. But if Berkshire were in fact a bit older than assumed, those delicate features would suggest not boyhood, but womanhood. Connor sighed. His frustration at the whole thing usettled him.

"Remove your shirt, private." If Berkshire was in fact a young man, it would be simply an unusual request by a commanding officer. If the private were a girl, the horror of it might bring forth the confession he hoped for.

His request shot a round of fear and anxiety into her chest. Panic surrounded her, she debating running for it, but that wasn't going to help her case. She took a few panicked breaths before she forced herself to shake her head. "N-No.... N...No sir." She gulped, trying to keep her head held high, though she feared her cowardess was already quite clear. "I... I see no reason to." She forced from her mouth, knowing damn well the reason.

The Captain didn't seemed at all surprised or indignant that the private defied the order. Berkshire's exasperation was clearly evident, far more exaggerated than just a boy's modesty about a skinny frame. The recruit was horrified of disrobing. Connor folded his hands before him on the field table as he looked up at the nerve-wracked young 'man'.

"And why is that, soldier, that you see no reason to obey an order?" Connor had no intention of actually making the soldier take off his shirt. If his hunch was right, doing so would place him in an awkard position of staring at a pair of breasts. But he knew the command would force his suspicions to be validated. It was a bit cruel, something Connor did not relish, having already taken a shine to Berkshire. But the situation was quite a sticky one, should Berkshire be a woman and had actually attempted to deceive the US Army and join up as a man.

"Is it because beneath your uniform you are not, in fact, a man?" He finally posed his accusation. "Come now, honesty is the best path forward here, Berkshire. I understand the circumstances under which you would do such a thing, and it is an honorable one. If you are honest with me, I will not report you until we can talk through your situation. For God's sake, settle down before you faint." Connor gestured to a stool across the table from him. "Sit. and tell me the truth."

Her heart dropped as the words left his mouth. She was greatful for his invitation to sit, but she doubted reporting. Cassandra collapsed onto the stool as she started to cry. "H-He's only fourteen... He would've been slaughtered out there- He was plannin' on lyin' to me, but I wouldn't let 'im. I-I couldn't just let him march into battle only to die. He's still in school and he's got 'is whole life ahead of him. He-He was ready to just throw it all away. I couldn't let him. I just couldn't!" She sobbed, burying her face in her hands.

All the pain she had buried deep below resurfaced in an instance. All the hurt and tears she shed returned to bite her. Needless to say, it wasn't a great feeling.

As the boy...girl, started to cry, Connor bent his head and rubbed his forehead. Of all the challenges he faced as a commander, this was one he had not wrestled before. He lifted his eyes to look at Berkshire again, as she wept into her hands. He saw her for the first time, really, since having first seen her just a day or so earlier. But then, the captain knew her as Sebastian Berkshire, a young man who had a curious appearance and behavior. His brain had struggled to fit the man into what he knew was a man, and it was like pounding a round beg in a square hole.

But he could look at that person as she truly was, through the expectation of what a woman was. She was young but quite beautiful, though the hacked hair cut tended to hide it a bit. Her hands, as he looked a them, were feminine and thin. What Conner had before him was a young woman in a man's uniform. An imposter trying to save her beloved sibling. What a mess she had made of things, for both of them.

"Stop crying." He ordered, but with a softer voice. "As of the moment, you are still a soldier, and not a child." Folding his hands again, he leaned forward a bit. "I assume your name is not Sebastian, what is your name?"

She sniffed, listening to his quiet orders. She sniffed a bit, wiping some tears from her eyes as she took a few heavy breaths. "C-Cassandra Berkshire, sir,"

She took a few deep breaths, trying to get her shaking body to feel some sense of comfort while admist a hellstorm of fear. She ran her fingers through her dishevled hair before pulling her hat back firmly over her head. "I-I'm so sorry for dragging you into this- I-I just feel awful about it... I-I really don't want to get you in any form of trouble." She sniffed.

"You have placed me in a difficult spot, Cassandra. The easiest thing to do would be to discharge you and send you away. I would do so secretly, to avoide shaming you. It is the most sensible and trouble-free option for me." He stated matter of fact, even as he watched the girl comb delicate fingers through her thick, hacked hair, only to have it covered again with her cap.

His statement was followed by a pause, one filled with a flurry of thoughts in the officer's head. He had to admit it, now more easily knowing the recruit's gender, how attractive she was, and how attracted he was to her. Much younger than himself, she was nonetheless not only physically appealing, she was of strong character, if not of constitution, something he found as attractive as her youthful beauty.

"But, we can discuss other options, if you are so willing. Cassandra, do you want to stay?" He asked, a brow quirking as he posed his curisous question.

She bit her lip for a moment or two as she thought of his words. This was a decision she had to make. An important decision. A decision that could mean life or death for her. She let out a shaky breath before nodding slowly. "Yes... I-I want to stay." At least here she didn't have to face her family.

Plus, this wasn't so bad. Right? Though she knew she was lying to herself. Cassandra was terrified. But now knowing that at least he knew, it did soothe some of her worries.

"Is...Is it possible for me to have access to my own tent? I-If not that's okay I-I can deal with it, I-I just don't want anyone else to find out," She said softly, rubbing the back of her neck with a sigh, sniffing a bit.
