neither here nor there.
Hey all! @Nyctibius and I were discussing this topic as we've both turned one another onto various YouTube personalities. Everyone has content creators they love, and a lot of those with smaller followings deserve some recognition and positive attention! This is your opportunity to tell us about a creator you enjoy and would like others to enjoy as well!

THE CONDITIONS:
  • The content creator you share must have fewer than one million followers/subscribers (whether it be on YouTube, Twitch, etc).
  • Please post a hyperlink to their main page as opposed to posting full videos. You're welcome to recommend your favorites for others to watch, but I'd like to keep this thread relatively calm when it comes to excessive videos.
  • Please avoid posting creators whose content could be intrepreted as hateful/inflammatory/controversial. While we have zero opinion on what you watch or who you choose to support in your free time, Umbra does not wish to promote the platforms of those who antagonize others, indirectly or otherwise.

NEVERMIND'S LIST:
  • Dominic Noble (187k subscribers) - Dom is without a doubt my favorite content creator. Period. I have been following him for years and his content continues to entertain. Dom has a show called "Lost in Adaptation" where he reviews and discusses films and their literary counterparts. His videos are so entertaining I will watch any regardless of whether I've seen the film or read the book he is discussing. He's charming, intelligent, has a great sense of humor, and always shows off his kitties in the bloopers at the end of each video. For those who love literature and/or film, this show is a fascinating dive into how small and large changes can have a drastic effect on a story.
  • Folding Ideas - (325k subscribers) - All I have to say about Dan is please watch his three-part series entitled "A Lukewarm Defense of Fifty Shades". It isn't what you think, but it is fantastic.
  • Sam Johnson (638k subscribers) - Sam is an absolute joy. He is a voice teacher who reacts to all kinds of people singing and analyzes what is working about their performance and what isn't. What I appreciate about Sam is that he knows what the hell he is talking about, and even though I know abosutely nothing about singing, I find it fascinating to just listen to him. He is also incredibly respectful to less successful performances and never insults or talks down, which I appreciate it. He is a positive king.
  • John Maclean (682k subscribers) - For all those interested in make up (and for all those not interested), please for the love of all that his holy check out John. He is a posh Scottish professional make up artist/vampire/diety/legend with a vocabulary and sense of humor that is too powerful for this world. (And before you say anything, yes, apparently "fil-um" is a valid way of pronouncing "film" in some parts of Scotland. Who knew?)
  • The Cosmonaut Variety Hour (898k subscribers) - Marcus just talks about anything, mostly movies with some video games and whatever he feels like jammed in there. He's hilarious, and while I don't always agree with all of his opinions on film, listening to him always gives me a good freaking belly chuckle.

I will most likely be adding more content creators to this list as time goes on, these are just some of the ones who popped into my head first! Please share your favorite small creators! Or discuss those you may unknowingly have in common with someone else! [fa]heart[/fa]

I can vouch for Dom and Sam. Sam Johnson made me decide to learn how to sing professionally.

Mr. Terry History - 139k subscribers
Mostly a reaction channel, Mr. Terry is a history teacher who is devoted to learning as much as he can about history, but doesn't mind being creative about it. He also discusses a lot of history while viewing the videos, so if you ever wanted to learn a lot about a given era, figure, or event then this channel is a good one.

Geetsly's - 256k subscribers
A Star Wars tech/theory channel. If you ever wondered why Mandalorians are so powerful, or which faction had the best commando, or why droids don't do more things, Geetsly probably has an answer for you.

Like Nev I'll likely update this list with more as time goes on. Supporting your favorite creators is important.

John Maclean is our immortal God. Just saying.

I really like Folding Ideas too! Which brings me to my first fave, who I've watched for... I'm not exactly sure how many years, closing on a decade.

Lindsay Ellis - 873k - Really detailed and fun video essays on films and film related topics. She has some amazing knowledge on the topic and does extensive studies on every topic. I did enjoy her stuff as Nostalgia Chick too, it's what I first learned her stuff from, but I much prefer these videos. It also just feels nice to watch videos on films from a female point of view, you know?

Peter Draws - 840k - Art youtuber who mostly does videos where he draws with ink with his very distinctive style. It's not the drawing that draws me in - huehue - but his personality and rants on the background. Peter seems one of those guys you'd like to take a look inside their heads, and also not because it -might- be a bit too weird inside. Again, one of those very easy to digest and one of those youtubers I watch when I'm done with the hateful world and just want to relax.

arleebean - 122k - Another art youtuber, but she makes mostly paintings with watercolours and gouache - my favourite mediums! She also makes her own watercolours, and those videos are just so damn relaxing to watch, with the nice background music to match. Even if you don't do art yourself, I'd recommend giving her a try!

Ace of Clay - 261k - I'd call him art youtuber, although his medium is clay - as you might've guessed. He makes these really detailed and amazing clay sculptures, and in my opinion his style is very Burton-esque. One of those youtubers I can just binge on, especially on background while I'm doing other stuff. I will never wrap my head around how someone can do the things he does, even with the detailed video showing me exactly how.

Psych IRL - 178k - A reaction channel, sort of. She makes videos on broarder topics rather than reacting to single events. I feel that she goes deeper into how something happened, how something went viral, rather than pointing things out. Another thing I love about her videos is, that she never attacks other creators but wants to examine how and why things happened. I'm so happy I found her channel by accident!

If it's not obvious I watch crap ton of youtube. ^^' That includes some real trash, but also some that make me at least feel like I've been educated.

I think my all time favorite content creator happens to be:
Anthony Jones, AKA Robotpencil. (~40k subscribers) He is an artist, but I think his views on motivation, and talent- how to Get good at your craft are extremely valuable. The most impressive thing about him IMO is his ability to work fast. If you're ever looking for a good way to kick artist/writer's block's ass, Anthony Jones has a few good words of advice that really changed me significantly as a content creator myself.

To quote him, "What if I got really really good, really really fast?"

Things I learned from Anthony jones: Your first draft is valuable, but disposable. If its not working, scrap it and start from scratch. You'll get it done faster and better.

I have another one for you:

For Harriet (133K subscribers) - This one is probably going to be more niche for a lot of people, but I really appreciate this creator's thoughts and have been binging her videos lately so I'd like to share her! Kim offers commentary regarding the black experience. She discusses movies, events, celebrity personas, and pretty much just anything she wants as it relates to black culture (not all of her videos are focused on black culture itself, but her perspective is that of a black woman and it's something I appreciate).

I'm an extremely light-skinned biracial individual, and a lot of her videos are not for me necessarily. Being light-skinned means that although I'm closely related to black culture, I don't experience life in the same way as someone with a darker skin tone. Kim is extremely articulate, thought-provoking, and humorous, and allows me the opportunity to view things from an alternative perspective.

If you're into social commentary, definitely look into Kim's channel for yourself.

There are so many talented people on YouTube, and I listen to a lot of musicians and cover bands off it.

One just popped back into my life that I have to share: Postmodern Jukebox. Do you like tapdancing, flaming saxophones, and one chick playing ten different instruments and up to three (3) trumpets at the same time? Then check them out.

The Anadromist (1330 subs) - Videos commenting on the movements in pop culture through the 20th century, and the nature of propaganda. Really interesting dude, who deserves far more subscribers than he has now.

David Stewart (43K subs) - A self-published pulp author, schoolteacher, and musician. His videos are about writing, culture, and also sometimes about the corporate corruption of entertainment such as Star Wars and other old IPs that he calls "skinsuits".

Tod's Workshop (383K subs) - A knife-maker by trade, and a medieval history enthusiast who also makes props for movies. His videos are about making historical weapons and testing them out, in particular he has a series where he tests arrows shot at a longbow speed against different types of armour.

Jonathan Pageau (129K subs) - An Orthodox Christian from Quebec. His videos are about the symbolic meaning of various ideas and concepts in culture, religion, and the occult.

Bjorn Andreas Bull-Hansen (442K subs) - A Norwegian novelist and outdoors enthusiast. His videos are always him hiking or camping in the woods while he talks about whatever's on his mind, which lately has been the looming spectre of globalism.

Count Dankula (874K subs) - This is the Scottish guy who got fined for teaching his girlfriend's puppy to do a nazi salute back in 2018. Turns out he's hilarious. It's Count Dankula on youtube, everybody should subscribe.

FreedomToons (704K subs) - Libertarian political cartoonist. His early stuff was weak, but during the summer of 2020 he was on fire (just like certain cities).

I should also add Paul VanderKlay (19K subs). He's a pastor of a small church in Sacramento who started out in 2017 or so making commentary videos on Jordan Peterson's bible lectures, but then as Peterson's content got stale and he eventually disappeared around 2019, Paul started following and commenting on other thinkers on youtube that people would recommend to him, like John Vervaeke (42K subs), with his Awakening From The Meaning Crisis lectures; and Rebel Wisdom (232K subs) which did some stuff on Peterson but also a lot of stuff on culture in general; and Jonathan Pageau which I already mentioned in my post above; as well as Eric Weinstein's "The Portal" podcast (no new content since 2020); and some of Bret Weinstein's interviews; and other assorted guys who would sometimes appear on Rebel Wisdom, like Daniel Schmachtenberger and Iain McGilchrist.

So it ended up that Paul became for me sort of a curator of wisdom from across the internet, where in his videos he would pull together the things that different people were saying about culture and religion and psychology and try to integrate them into his own mental model of the world. You'll find that a good number of his videos are just stuff related to his own church, or to internal disputes within his branch of protestant christianity that I don't care about, but the other videos that he does are him coming to grips with different philosophical ideas, usually prompted by some other videos he saw in various places, and I find those ones very interesting. He's like me, just trying to figure out what's really going on in the world, except that he's twice my age and has read a lot more books than me, so he can come at it from angles I never thought of, and with his 19,000 followers he can also crowdsource a lot of ideas, picking out things from conversations with random people here and there or on his Discord.
