Hey guys, not sure if this thread has already been made but thought it would be worth a try. I really enjoy TV and having critical discussions about the shows that interest me. I figured I'd take this interesth to the internet. So here goes —

I have been catching up with Hulu's The Handmaids Tale after some had elapsed between episodes. I am finding it slow - painfully slow at times - but not boring enough for me to stop watching. It certainly is an interesting story. The characters are all well crafted, and each episode ends on something of a cliffhanger, which makes one want to keep going.

Skins (UK) is also something I have returned to recently. Partly I put off returning to it because at the time there were so many series on Netflix that I hadn't seen yet, and partly because I just wanted a bit of light entertainment. It's a lot darker in tone, but its not all doom and gloom. There is humor throughout it, as well as quite serious moments. There are a lot of shows that portray teenage life in a way that is unrealistic; however, Skins captures the essence of what it was like to be a teenager very well — the desire to fit into groups, to find your identity, to experiment, to be more independent, to rebel against parents and teachers, to make mistakes and learn from them... That being said, the excessive partying, drinking and smoking I couldn't really relate to but thats more because when I was 16 and 17 I was painfully shy and had no interest whatsoever in those things. I love the way actual teenagers were cast in the roles, and not just random 30 year olds. This show really does do justice to the young people who watch it. All of us on here are no longer teenagers anymore, but for the sake of nostalgia and a good laugh, I highly recommend it. Don't bother with the US one.

Anyone seen True Blood? Recommend? Not recommend? Good? Bad?

True Blood is
great! ...For the first couple seasons. Then it gets all sorts of stupid ridiculous. It still has it's moments, don't get me wrong - it's not like I stopped watching it - but the real charm and awesome is front loaded. It has been quite some time since I've seen it but the series does stick out as worthwhile.

My favorite TV show right now is... wait for it...

Arcane!

I know, complete shocker~

I like a lot of older ones that haven't been on air in a long time. So my hubby and I are watching Buffy the vampire Slayer. I loved firefly.
The Witcher is good. Vikings. I could go on lol
I never watched Buffy! Was always on when my sister had friends around but I never watched an episode. I should start. I can see from your avatar that you like Sailor Moon? Should I bite the bullet and watch it? I haven't watched anime in ages.

I have heard lots of good things about the Withcer, but is it super high fantasy? I can admire shows with complex worlds and magic systems but sometimes it intimidates me!

Thanks! I'll have to get around to watching it. I get what you mean when shows get ridiculous - it just throws away loyal viewers. I am watching CW's Supergirl and while I love the characters it is quite cringy at times. Maybe because of the TV-PG rating?

Critical discussion of TV shows, you say!?

True Blood is one of those adaptations that starts off fairly good and then spirals wildly out of control until by season 3 you're not sure there's anything left of the books they were based on. I enjoyed the books a fair bit, not my favorite, but the show lost my interest after a bit because (to me anyway) it felt incoherent.

My personal favorite right now is also Arcane, which is hands down one of the best animated series probably ever? It's got flaws, far from perfect in plenty of respects, but it does so amazingly much right that it's hard not to gush. Of the 9 Annie Awards it was nominated for, it won all 9, which I am told by my artist friend is a big deal. There is a ton I could discuss about the show, the complexities are elegant and nuanced, but I feel like I'd butcher it.

The Witcher is what I'd call level fantasy. The lore can go deep, but it's approachable for someone who doesn't know anything about it. The first season is pretty good, but it can be a little confusing in terms of storytelling. The second season... isn't great. Lots of poor writing choices. I still had a ton of fun with it though, lots of good character moments even if the plot around them is a bit weak.

The last recent-ish stuff I watched was Book of Boba Fett and it was mostly very weak. I don't think they really knew what to do with the character at all.

I'm actually not really an anime fan. But I like Sailor moon, but I'm watching the seasons of sailor moon crystal before I watch the other stuff on Netflix I think. In my opinion it's worth watching.

It's been like 20 years since I last had cable, but occasionally in the past I have picked up the DVDs for an HBO series if I heard it was good. But I haven't done that in like 5 years, so there's not much that's recent for me to talk about. Except maybe Hockey Night In Canada (although even that one I sort of lost interest because of the pandemic, and even a bit before that, ever since they cancelled Don Cherry because reasons). Now that it's spring, my favourite TV show will have to be the Blue Jays games on Sportsnet.

My favourite right now has to be the orville, it's like the old star trek, before they killed it with Scott bakula

^ Still this.

Devastated that Arcane season 2 will not be coming out this year but happy that quality remains a priority. I'm willing to suffer the wait.

I'm currently binging House of Cards from Netflix, it's intense >.>
I liked that show, especially Robin Wright!

A show I am late getting into that I've been binging is 'The Americans'. Its a noir spy thriller sort where the Soviet Union had integrated spies into American society in the 1960's and they are 'currently' in the 1980's. Stars Kerri Russel and Matthew Rhys, and Richard 'John Boy' Thomas as the FBI director of counterintelligence. I really like Annet Mahendru as Nina Krilova, a Russian spy working at the Russian Embassy in Washington DC.

Another show I'm watching as the week's episode drops is The Mandalorian.

Justified: City Primeval

I am so into Clement Mansell as a character and wanna write as him/someone like him/using his faceclaim.
