In fact science fiction and fantasy is a genre that offers a buffet of ideas, sand to play in and limitless possibilities. Alien worlds and people, cultures and politics that completely boggle the mind. Massive set piece battles and witnessing the marvel that is indeed the universe itself.

So what's your favourite and perhaps least favourite part of Science Fiction or Fantasy? Be it on any media, the movies (both old and new), games or just lore than makes a brow raise. Be it Star Wars, Star Trek, The Expanse or anything you've ever come across!

My least favorite part of Star Trek is how idealistic it is. Like, I just don't believe that humanity would be allowed to become successful enough to become the "Leader" of any interplanetary/intergalactic United Nations. We'd be like, the toddler at the kids table. At best. XD

They sort of brushed on that in DS9. Sisko mentions that Earth has it all good; no war, hunger or poverty. This tends to give humans a sort of attitude that well everyone wants to be like them.

I do agree though. Humanity is, in my opinion, more fun to see them in more shades of grey; noble some ways but utterly ruthless in others.

This is why I like Star Wars better, tbh. Humanity isn't the "Alpha" civilization, not even close to it. Sure, they are more prolific, and generally more successful in the long run, but there are other, bigger, meaner, more advanced civilizations out there. Just waiting to eat Humanity's tiny little Empire/Alliance. And they almost have, several times.

I didn't watch a whole lot of DS9, tbh. I kind of fell off the Trek ship after TNG. I've peeked in occasionally, but Star Wars tends to grab my attention more.

What's your take on the Disney Movies/Canon versus the Legends?

As someone who spent way too much time playing KotoR II and SWtOR and fell in love with that time period, Legends is and always will be the only Canon for me. The new stuff is just retreading of the old to get more milage out of it. Some of it is entertaining and thoughtful, but the majority of it just strikes me as pandering to millenials and their revolving door of emotionally-driven causes. No real substance to speak of, but it's entertaining to look at/watch unfold for the length of time allotted.

I will always love the Old Republic Era and even the lore from the Xim-Hutt War and when the Republic went on full 40k. For me the newer movies have potential. Rey is an example of a character with potential but mismanaged by her writer. They swung and miss relying on too many rehashed ideas like you said. Memories only go so far but I blame that on them just going for cash and rushing for the end.

Part of me was hoping they'd use the pool of Legends material like say, Rebels did with Thrawn. Less a rehash but more a bringing an old favourite back that keeps to the original but also seems fresh.

The only way the current run of movies can really redeem itself to me, is if they end up doing some kind of call back to a threat from the Old Republic era, like the Eternal Sith Empire, or maybe hinting at the Yuusan Vong in some way. For fucks sake, Kylo and Rey are already a weird mishmash of all of the Solo/Skywalker kids from the Legends young reader novels, they may as well just go full bore and throw some new take on the Vong in.

Sith Empire 2: Electric Boogaloo. Show Kylo how some real Sith do the deal. I've always enjoyed the idea of say, Knights of Ren coming across an Old Sith in statis and them completely wrecking their shit.

As Kreia said: "If you were to face an ancient Sith Lord in combat, you would learn that we are as children playing with toys compared to the prowess of the old masters."

YES. Pretty much this. That's essentially what I figured the Knights of Ren would be, before the whole "Luke's Former Padawans" theory. I mean, it makes more sense for them to be that, I suppose? Though from everything the new canon has said, the Knights of Ren aren't a new thing, so who the fuck knows? XD

For all we know, the Knights are some weird half-human/half-magna-guard ridiculousness, meant to keep Kylo in check.

Kylo Ren looks to dig up a Sith Lord to find ancient knowledge but ends up digging up Kenobi.

    "Hello there!"

Fuck it, just bring Revan into the New Republic Era. Or Darth Nihilus. Either way, there will be lots of people panicking and shitting themselves. XD

So long as they cast Keanu Reeves as Revan, I won't bitch. XD

I've already got my two Cyberpunk nerds written up. I just want my hands on the character creator.

Tbh, the more I hear about that game, the less interested I am in it. The draw of Keanu isn't quite enough to make up for the constant backpedaling of features and change of perspective. If I'm going to be spending hours in an extensive character creator, I want to be able to see my goddamned masterpiece when I'm done. XD
