About HEAVEN KILLERS

From the Group Search:
In an alternate world much similar to a macabre Victorian London, demons are running rampant on the world. An Order of demon hunters called The Dark Chapter was created in attempts to fight back. Using magicks sanctioned by the Holy Church and an array of skills learned through vigarous training, members go out in squads at night to patrol and eliminate any demons that come into sight. It is uncertain why these demons appeared hundreds of years ago, but soon enough, the members of a particular squad will discover that nothing appears what it seems.

Your character is a member of the Dark Chapter. Whether you are new or seasoned is entirely up to you. You will be part of a newly assigned squad, in which will do routine patrols. However, you will come to find that something is out of the ordinary considering the circumstances. And what is even stranger is that it all begins after you find what looks to be an ordinary marble.

HEAVEN KILLERS is a cause-and-effect roleplay, where your character's choices will reflect what happens to them and the people around them. Some choices may be favorable, others not, some may have more benefits or dire consequences. Keep in mind that making very bad decisions COULD cause your character to die. There is very little plot armor for stupidity and so I would take that into consideration.

In regards to mechanics, I do not require anything particularly special from the players. I, as the GM, may use dice, cards, RNG in order to set the stage for certain situations (not all, because a lot of the story will be catered to the characters), but I do not require the same for the roleplayers if they do not want to. I do like to use story episodes, arcs and acts in order to establish milestones and goals for characters to meet. This also means that I will cater parts of the story to showcase and highlight each character. You are 100% welcome to contribute your ideas to this so that you may receive the character development you desire.

SETTING

HEAVEN KILLERS is set in an alternate universe in a time similar to Victorian London. The city in which characters will be focused in is called SAN CIRCA--a cathedral city that still has cobblestone streets and stone and wooden buildings. Technology is at Victorian London (mid 1800's) level. So there's horse-drawn carriages, revolvers and rifles, typewriters, etc. (If you have a question on if a certain tech is acceptable, please feel free to ask.) The cathedral is large and gothisc in style. Inside, it has a Catholic feel, and The Church within this world is definitely based off of a romanticized Catholocism (I am not Catholic and I can guarantee that it will not accurately follow Catholic customs). Most people within this cathedral city are of faith, but you will also find those that are not.

During the day, it is safe to wander around. No demons have been known to attack while the sun is out. However, it is possible to see small spore or soot-like particles floating in the air. What could be mistaken for sulfer coming from chimneys and workshops may actually be a type of minor demon called UMBRA. It is almost bacterial, and will collect on stationary surfaces to create plant-like organisms. If left alone long enough, it will grow into a garden worth of these black sooty plants. They are harmless to humans in small doses, but long-time exposure can cause halucinations and deleria. If a person remains in contact with the umbra too frequently, it may even cause mania and severe physicall illness leading to death. Even still, most daily life activity happens during the day due to the safty of daylight.

At night, the umbra is more abundant. It also attracts lesser demons who feed off of it when no human flesh is accessible. Lesser demons prowl the night and like the beasts they take the forms of, they lack sentience but are clever and lust for survival and to feed. They lurk in shadows, and some bolder demons may even walk the streets. Any human they may sense, they will go after. It has been discovered that demons will devour both the flesh and the soul of a person. It is possible to survive a demon attack, but you will be marked and may be suceptible to future attacks. The Dark Chapter uses this to their advantage.

INFO

The Dark Chapter
The Dark Chapter is the name of the demon hunting Order that was created and approved by The Church a couple hundred years ago. Their purpose was to use magic combative skill to fight off the demons and protect nearby villages and towns. The Church had discovered that holy magic and weapons embued with holy power would effectively kill demons, and so began to sanction weapons and spells for these demon hunters to use.

Fields of Expertise
Within the Dark Chapter, there are four "classes" to pick from called a Field of Expertise. Each Field utilizes different weapons and techniques in order to fight and exterminate demons. These Fields are Ensis, Tempesta, Exorcismo, and Domare. Each member is decided to follow one, and rarely changes Fields unless necessary. Each Field of Expertise is present in a squad, allowing a rounded out and balanced team.

ENSIS - The Sword. Traditionally, Ensis were members that used swords that have been blessed and sanctioned in order to slay demons. Swords were commonly inscribed with verses and hymns and enchanted to have holy or fire qualities. Today, Ensis use any melee weapon of their choosing. Weapons continued to be blessed, sanctioned and enchanted, and may or may not have holy and fire qualities. It does help, but so long as they have been blessed, they do their job. Ensis are usually trained to use one or two types of weapons, but they are not limited to that if they are able to learn more.
Examples of weapons: swords, shields, lances, halberds
TEMPESTA - The Storm. Bows and arrows were the traditional weapon for Tempestas. It was said that the spirit of God carried their arrows strong, allowing them to cut through the winds and hit their mark. Like the Ensis weapons, Tempesta's long-ranged or projectile weapons are required to be blessed, senctioned and enchanted in order to effectively kill demons. Tempesta must be prepared at all times. Nothing is worse than a Tempesta that runs out of ammo.
Examples of weapons: crossbows, guns, rifles, bombs
EXORCISMO - The Exorcism. A field adopted from The Church, this member is capable of using holy relics, artifacts, and objects to spellcast in various ways. They were traditionally used to protect, but as demonic activity worsened, more and more Exorcismos decided to utilize their magicks for offense. Now, the field is versatile, capable of using their magicks for offensive, defensive, support, or utility. Through objects they are capable of spellcasting through voice activated, scribed, or movement.
Examples of weapons: tomes, hymns, crucifix, rasaries, cencers
DOMARE - The Tamer. This is a relatively new field, and is seen as the more taboo of the three. To fight fire with fire, some members are actually studied in demonology in order to use lesser demons to their advantage. Instead of using holy magic, they use what is considered unholy (not necromancy, mind you). This is a very tricky field to deal with and takes an incredible amount of skill and training to use it successfully. The more successful one is, the more hesitance they may be met with by the common people.
Example of weapons: runes, sigils, grimoires, blood
DEMONS

Lesser Demons
Lesser demons are monstrous things. They take on the form of beasts. Anything from animal-like to things you could only imagine being from the depths of Hell. They are usually black in color, shadowy. Some have a fleshy charred appearance to them, or are glossy or ashen or swollen purple looking. It really depends on the type of lesser demon you encounter. Lesser demons vary in intelligence level, but none of them are sentient enough to be human-level. They all are driven by their need to feed, and will always find a way to attack humans. Smaller, weaker lesser demons will first feed off of umbra until they grow enough to take on larger prey. If you find umbra, surely you'll find lesser demons nearby.

Greater Demons
Greater demons are rare to see. But if you ever see one, you better not be alone. There are many of them. So far records show there may be sixty-nine of them. They are incredibly clever, and often use logic to try and fool their opponents before even attempting to lift a finger to fight. If even possible, it would take a full team or two to take one down. They are intelligent, sentient, and have hundreds of years of experience under their belts. They do not show themselves often, so if you are graced with their presence, it means something very, very bad is going to happen.

MAKING A CHARACTER

As mentioned somewhere above, you will be making a character that is part of the Dark Chapter. These people are trained in the art of demon hunting. They come from every walks of life, and don't necessarily have to be from the city of San Circa (though it may help). Before they are even allowed out on the field, they must go through 3 years of training minimum. Domare generally are not let out onto the field until at least 5 years of training due to the nature of their Field of Expertise. Below you will find the required information I need for your character:

Appearance (drawn, illustrated, anime, etc only please)
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Field of Expertise:
Weapon(s):
Personality:
History:
Other:

I had also mentioned that there would be a stat system that I would implement mainly for my own references. It may also help you crasp your character and their capabilities.

Each character will have 10 points that you may distribute into these categories:
  • Strength (physical prowess)
  • Will (mental prowess)
  • Knowledge
  • Rapport
  • Instinct
  • Deduction (decision making)
STRENGTH - This is in regards to your character's physical prowess. Their physical capabilities. How strong they are offensively and defensively. This counts for attack and durability as well as endurance, acrobatics and agility. Anything done physically.

WILL - This is in regards to your character's mental prowess. Their mental fortitude. This also includes anything like their connection to their faith and stubbornness.

KNOWLEDGE - This is in regards to how learned your character is in an academic setting or in a setting that requires them to actively learn. Characters may be able to recall information that they have learned or be able to pick up or process information faster with this stat.

RAPPORT - This is in regards to a character's connection with other people. The more rapport, the more access to contacts they may have. This may include members of the Dark Chapter, The Church, or even citizens around the city. Maybe even further out.

INSTINCT - This is in regards to a character's innate ability to sense motives or notice things around them. This is exceptionally good for perception purposes or reading people.

DEDUCTION - This is in regards to anything to do with actively searching, investigating, putting abstract clues together, and making decisions in critical moments.

Characters may be able to earn extra stat points that will scale their stats higher if they have some of the attributes below. If your character has any of the following attributes, please add 1 extra point to your total amount of stat points or to the stat specified on the attribute. You may have up to 5 extra points maximum, so choose wisely.

  • Your character was raised in The Dark Chapter (+1 rapport or knowledge)
  • Your character was raised in The Church (+1 rapport or knowledge)
  • Your character has been with The Dark Chapter for more than 15 years (+1)
  • Your character is a devout member of The Church (+1 will)

  • Name: Gwenuivere "Gwen" O'Connor
    Age: 26
    Gender: Female
    Field of Expertise: Domare

Weapon(s): Runes enhanced with blood. She also has a large Grimiore that she doesn't carry with her but studies at any given moment. The spine to it is cracked and mostly broken and there are scribbled shorthand notes on all of the pages.

Personality: At first Gwen is stand-offish and would rather spend time by herself. She's quiet, both literally and figuratively and would rather spend time in comfortable silence. Most of all, before you get to know her, she's aloof. This comes across with the silence and avoidance. However, once you do get to know her a bit, she's snarky and loyal. Though she isn't as mischevious as her brothers were she has a streak of kindness and empathy a mile wide. She'd rather put herself in danger than anyone else.

History: Gwen was born into a loving family with three older brothers. Her early life was uneventful, filled with warm happy memories. When she was 6 it all changed. Her oldest brothers (18 and 16 at the time) had been training to become Hunters. They were attacked after chasing the youngest brother out into the dark. Lance came back with a gouge out of his arm and dragging a crying Arthur with him. Her oldest brother, Mordred, had covered their escape. They found what was left of his body the next morning. A week later Lance was attacked and didn't survive. With the loss of his two oldest boys, Gwen's father left. This loss, both her brothers, her father, and the trauma of seeing Arthur covered in his brother's blood was enough for Gwen to stop talking.

Her mother, Ruby, tried everything she could think of to get Gwen to talk, going to priests, going to psychics. Anything to make her little girl talk again. Some took advantage of the fact that Gwen wouldn't talk and only added to her trauma. Nothing would make her speak and after a while, Gwen forgot she could and relied entirely on sign language. When Gwen was 14, Arthur being 19 joined the Dark Chapter. Gwen didn't see Arthur for a silent 3 years. He came back on her 17th birthday, larger than she remembered.

When Arthur saw the state of the house that Gwen had been living in, at the sheer amount of umbra growing in the corners, he took her out of there for the weekend. Gwen doesn't remember a lot from the weekend other than a lot of yelling from Arthur and their mother begging him to let her have her little girl back. The night terrors and dizziness hadn't just been because of an illness. Ruby had it worse, she had full-on hallucinations and had to be hospitalized. Arthur took Gwen in and requested that she be able to stay with him. The request wasn't granted immediately but Gwen was allowed to stay as long as she started learning how to be a Hunter as well. Arthur wasn't pleased but Gwen was a bright girl and needed the challenge.

Three years later, when Gwen was about halfway done with her Domare training, a letter arrived. The teacher passed it to her and asked that she step out in the hall to read it. It was a letter saying that Arthur had been killed in a fight against a Greater Demon and that his sacrifice would be honoured. Gwen spent the next month going through the grieving stages. She'd had enough loss in her life and wasn't about to forget how it felt to lose someone because of the demons that plagued their world.

Two more years and Gwen finished her training. She was 22 when she passed her final test. Though she still couldn't speak she was a 'bright and resourceful' candidate. For the last four years she's just continued her education, being put out onto the field for lesser demons and umbra clearance. On her first round, she was bitten by a smaller demon. It didn't last long but it was enough to give her scars.

    Other:
-Due to trauma growing up, Gwen has selective mutism. It's not that she can't speak it's that she won't.
-On her right wrist she has three small dots that she made using a needle and some ink. One for each brother.
    - Gwen is ambidextrous but uses her left hand most often.
-She has a bite mark on her left shoulder, almost in a perfect circle, from a lesser demon about 3 years ago.
-That same attack cost her her left eye.

  • Strength:1
Will: 2 (+1 Indecisive about several topics)
    Knowledge:3
    Rapport:1
Instinct: 2 (+1 Growing up poor)
    Deduction: 1 (+1 Internal turmoil)
